The recent front page article “Report: Genetically altered food is safe” astounded me. There is so much science that says just the opposite of what this article represented. You can search the Internet and find sites that agree somewhat with this one, but there are many more that don’t.

When I was growing up, our food was without chemicals added, or dangerous pesticides sprayed on our crops. Nowadays, our crops are sprayed with billions of toxic chemicals every year. Countries worldwide have officially banned the cultivation of Genetically Modified crops. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) urges doctors to prescribe non-GMO diets for all patients. Roundup, for example, is linked with sterility, hormone disruption, birth defects and cancer.

The FDA allows companies to put their GMO food on the market. They justify this by saying they had no information showing GMO foods were substantially different. This is not accurate. A lawsuit showing overwhelming consensus even among the FDA’s own scientists was that GMOs can create unpredictable, hard-to-detect side effects. They urged long-term safety studies. But the White House had instructed the FDA to promote biotechnology, and the agency official in charge of policy was Michael Taylor, Monsanto’s former attorney, later their vice president. He has been the U.S. Food Safety Czar since 2010 and is supposedly retiring in June of this year. Scientists who discover problems with GMOs have been attacked, gagged, fired, threatened and denied funding.
